The next phase of AI change will be led by agents. Instead of just answering questions or following commands, these AI tools will perform complex tasks and act more independently.

This will change many things, as we will be able to assign more and more tasks to machines. By connecting with other apps, agents can handle things like shopping, scheduling, managing travel, and other everyday activities with digital services.

Amazon has been working to bring AI into homes, and Alexa’s voice is known around the world (though it’s mainly used as a very powerful timer).

As homes get filled with more smart gadgets, AI agents could make it even easier to interact with technology at home. But Amazon’s plans likely go further. Here’s what we know so far and what it could mean for future smart homes.

What Is Nova Act?

Amazon recently introduced its own AI agent model called Nova Act. Like ChatGPT Operator, it can control a web browser and do many things we can do.

When you think about how often we use apps on our phones, you can see how big of an impact this could have on our daily lives.

Amazon says Nova Act can book trips, make online purchases, and manage calendars and to-do lists.

One key difference between Nova Act and other agent-based platforms, like Operator, is that Nova Act will be built into an upgrade for Alexa. This could be great, making home AI assistants much more useful.

There will be strong privacy protections for technology like this, which could gather personal details about our daily lives.

A report from TechCrunch says Nova Act does better than competitors, including OpenAI and Anthropic, on important tests for agentic AI.

Agentic AI Assistants

Other agentic services like Operator and Manus might be available (they are research previews like Nova Act), but they don’t have the same reach into millions of homes.

Popular voice assistants like Alexa and Siri made voice-activated technology popular, but they’ve been slow to add the advanced technology used by ChatGPT.

After using a chatbot like ChatGPT, trying to talk to Alexa or Siri can be frustrating. They are not as good at having conversations or understanding detailed commands.

What they are good at is working with apps and services. By using agentic AI, Amazon could make home assistants that are as smart and conversational as ChatGPT, but also able to control other services like Alexa and Siri.

Recently, Apple added its Apple Intelligence platform to Siri, hoping it will lead to a big breakthrough in AI-equipped phones.

Google is taking a different approach. Its Gemini chatbot is a standalone voice AI, instead of trying to add it to Google Assistant—for now.

It’s clear that big AI companies think it’s time for us to welcome the next generation of smart technology into our homes. But is it really a good idea?

Problems with Agentic AI in the Home

Agentic AI could change everything, but there are concerns we need to address first.

These include security issues. When we bring new technology into our homes, we need to be sure it won’t create new security risks.

There’s also the big privacy problem. People have worried about how secure smart speakers are in protecting personal conversations. With always-on AI assistants, the risk of privacy invasion becomes even bigger.

Some people are worried that if we rely too much on AI for everyday tasks, we might lose the ability to think and solve problems ourselves.

We should also think about AI making mistakes. No one knows for sure how the AI’s tendency to make things up will work in a system that can take actions, but it could cause problems.

In the end, I think it’s clear that agentic AI will become a bigger part of our lives, including in our homes. Amazon has a good chance of making this happen, thanks to Alexa and Echo’s popularity.

One thing is for sure: with AI, we still have a lot to figure out. In the near future, more services and devices will offer AI assistants for the home as we learn more about how they can help us.
