Maiorano Gregorio Interview
As technology reshapes the art world, balancing historical preservation with digital innovation presents both challenges and opportunities. Digitalization enhances accessibility through virtual museums, AI-driven analysis, and blockchain authentication, ensuring transparency and security in art ownership. NFTs, digital twins, and immersive experiences redefine curation and collecting, offering artists global reach and new revenue streams. However, integrating physical and virtual art demands overcoming technical, financial, and social challenges. The future of art lies in hybrid experiences, strategic audience engagement, and global collaborations, positioning digital transformation as a powerful tool for inclusivity and artistic evolution.
Safeguarding cultural heritage
We started the interview by asking, “How do you see the balance between preserving historical art and embracing digital innovation?”
Maiorano Gregorio replied, “The balance between the conservation of artistic heritage and digital innovation represents a crucial challenge but at the same time a great opportunity, because digitalization allows us to protect artistic heritage by making it accessible to a wider audience through virtual visits, digital archives and interactive platforms. Furthermore, through artificial intelligence and 3D, we can document and study in an innovative way while maintaining intact the authenticity of works of art without neglecting that digital technologies break down physical and cognitive barriers, promoting access for people with disabilities.”
The Impact of Blockchain
The Worlds Times: What role do you think technology, such as blockchain and digital twins, plays in redefining art ownership and authentication?
Maiorano Gregorio replied, “Blockchain technology and digital twins are revolutionizing the concept of ownership and authentication in art, redefining traditional processes through digital innovations.
Blockchain guarantees the authenticity of works of art by recording immutable information on a public ledger. NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) act as digital certificates that track ownership and transaction history, reducing the risk of fraud and forgery. Smart contracts allow for the automation of royalties for artists on subsequent sales, improving transparency and fairness in the art market. Democratization of the Market: Tokenization allows the fractionation of works of art into shares, making investments accessible to a wider audience. Digital twins create virtual copies of physical works, useful for preserving cultural assets, monitoring their condition or reproducing lost works. Combined with blockchain, digital twins can identify and authenticate the first copy of a work, distinguishing it from replicas. Digital twins themselves can become works of art or tools for innovative artistic explorations.
In short, these technologies not only improve security and transparency, but redefine the value and accessibility of art in the digital context.”
Bridging the Gap
The Worlds Times: How can the GMA Virtual Museum enhance accessibility to art for people who may never visit a physical gallery?
Maiorano Gregorio replied, “GMA’s Virtual Museum can improve accessibility to art for those who cannot physically visit a gallery through various innovative approaches:
Overcoming geographical and physical barriers: People with mobility disabilities, who live in remote areas or with economic difficulties, can easily access collections online, eliminating the need to travel or face structural obstacles.
Immersive and interactive experiences: Technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) allow you to explore works of art in an engaging way, recreating historical environments or providing detailed explanations that enrich understanding.
Inclusive digital accessibility: The use of tools such as audio guides, subtitles, alternative texts for images and simplified navigation guarantees a complete experience even for people with visual, hearing or cognitive disabilities.”
Expanding Horizons
The Worlds Times: In what ways can digital innovation create new opportunities for artists and collectors in the art world?
Maiorano Gregorio replied, “Digital innovation is revolutionizing the art world, creating new opportunities for both artists and collectors. Here’s how:
For Artists
- New Exhibition and Sales Platforms: Platforms like SuperRare, Foundation and ArtStation allow artists to exhibit and sell their works to a global audience, eliminating physical intermediaries and democratizing access to the market.
- NFTs and Blockchain: Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) guarantee uniqueness and digital ownership of works, offering artists new ways to monetize their work and reach global audiences.
- Innovative Creative Tools: Technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) push the boundaries of creativity, enabling new forms of expression and visual storytelling.
- 4. Visibility on Social Media: Platforms such as Instagram and TikTok act as virtual galleries, allowing artists to build communities, receive feedback and collaborate without geographical barriers.
For Collectors
- Global Access: Online platforms make it easier to buy and sell works of art, increasing transparency and diversification of the market.
- Investments in Digital Art: Blockchain technology allows you to buy digital art with guarantees of authenticity, opening up new opportunities for collecting.
- Immersive Experiences: Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) offer new ways to enjoy works of art, transforming exhibitions into unique interactive experiences.Digital innovation is therefore redefining the artistic landscape, making it more accessible, dynamic and inclusive for all the actors involved.”
Challenges and Solutions
The Worlds Times: What are the biggest challenges in integrating physical and virtual art experiences, and how would you address them?
Maiorano Gregorio replied, “Main challenges in the integration between physical and virtual experience are:
- Omnichannel and continuity between physical and digital channels
Ensuring a seamless transition between the physical and virtual world is complex. It requires integrated systems that allow customers to start an action in one channel (e.g. online) and complete it in another (e.g. physical store), without interruptions.
- Personalization of the user experience
Creating tailored experiences requires accurate data collection and advanced tools to analyze them, but poses challenges related to privacy and security.
- High costs of immersive technologies
The adoption of virtual reality, augmented reality or other phygital technologies can be limited by the costs of hardware and software, making it less accessible for companies and users.
- Risks of social isolation and addiction
Immersion in virtual experiences can lead to a disconnection from reality and problems of technological addiction, negatively affecting the social life of users.
- Technical and Infrastructure Challenges
Integration requires stable infrastructure, compatible devices, and adequate training to manage the technologies involved.
Strategies to address these challenges:
- Phased implementation: Introduce technologies in small pilot projects to test their effectiveness before a broader expansion.
- Cost optimization: Leverage scalable solutions and collaborate with technology partners to reduce initial costs.
- Monitoring technology use: Create guidelines for a balanced use of virtual experiences, avoiding dependencies.
- Data protection and security: Implement robust systems to ensure user privacy during data collection.
- Staff training: Invest in technical training to improve the integration of phygital technologies into business processes.”
The Future of Art Curation
The Worlds Times: How do you see the future of art curation evolving with the rise of immersive digital experiences?
Maiorano Gregorio replied, “The evolution of art curators with the growth of immersive digital experiences represents a significant transformation in the art landscape. Here are some key considerations:
Role of the Curator in the Digital Age
- Curators are no longer limited to the selection and organization of works, but must create narrative contexts that integrate traditional art and digital technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence.
- The digitization of collections and virtual exhibitions allow to reach a global audience, offering new ways of enjoying and interpreting art.
Challenges and Opportunities of Immersive Experiences
- Immersive art transforms the visitor into an active part of the experience, involving them through sounds, lights and multisensory narratives. This approach requires curators to rethink the interaction between the public, the exhibition space and the works.
- However, challenges related to intellectual property and the economic sustainability of these initiatives emerge.
The Future of Curating
- Curators must develop technological skills to design “phygital” (physical-digital) experiences, which combine real spaces and virtual elements.
- Collaboration with digital artists and the use of social media to promote and share art are increasingly central aspects.
In short, the curator of the future will be a hybrid figure, capable of combining artistic sensitivity and technological skills to create unique and engaging experiences.”
Bridging Art and Innovation
The Worlds Times: How would you engage different audiences—traditional art lovers, digital natives, and emerging collectors—with GMA’s offerings?
