Guiding Experiences for High-Performance Work Systems
We started the interview by asking, “What key experiences or standards have guided your approach to making high-performance work systems across different business sectors?”
Mohammad Ali Kalloo Khan replied, “High Performance Work Systems (HPWS) is all about establishing HR Policies, Procedures, Technology and Systems integrated in a way which is fit for purpose. A well designed HPW System will continuously enhance people competence, commitment and capability to enable them productively achieve the Organization Objectives.
It is indeed a challenge, as the strength of the system is as good as the weakest link in the chain. According to my many years of experience in different organizations, the weakest link is usually the capability and commitment of the people.
Transforming Weak Links into Strengths
The Worlds Times: So, how to convert this weak link to strong one?
Mohammad Ali Kalloo Khan replied, “People capability is proportional to their competencies and available resources. So, the obvious answer is to enhance people competency at every level of Organization and to provide them the resources they need. Job descriptions, Competency Frameworks, Learning & Development Programs and Assessment Systems are all crucial to achieve this.
Commitment is the glue which binds people thought and emotions to the Organization goal. Gaining people commitment is equally challenging as most of the people, most of the time look for their own picture (interest) in any group photo (Organization goal). Therefore employee engagement & motivation has to be enhanced at every level. This can be achieved only when leadership is strong and solid HR systems are in place including effective performance management, coaching & mentoring systems, rewards mechanisms & career progression systems are in place. Leadership must be able to articulate and implement Organization culture and core values. These act as a common thread to bind the teams of people with diverse backgrounds.”
