A Path to Sustainable Transformation

The Worlds Times: Renata, can you tell us more about what inspired you to combine neuroscience with leadership and organizational development?

Renata Coura replied, “Certainly! Learning, memory, creativity, adaptability, strategy, decision-making, selection of actions, actions and interactions: all those human specificities start from primary brain processes. Our brain is at the origin of everything we do and everything we are: the functioning of the body, the emotions, the intellect, the behaviors, how we engage, communicate, and perform. And to do so, it works almost 100% on automatic pilot, so that our mental processes are a mixture of unconscious and conscious mechanisms. This means that, even when we think we are in a conscious mode, we are influenced by unconscious processes, much more than we think. Such brain processes are the very source of many obstacles that prevent us from taking action, changing habits or changing our mentality or perspective. Neurosciences give us a key knowledge about the modes of operation of our brain at the individual and collective level, with its limits but also with its levers of action that allow our conscious brain to take the lead over the automatic one. The only way to change ourselves and the world around us is to be able to make more use of our prefrontal cortex (conscious brain), switching from automatic mode to aware mode when it’s necessary to purposely learn, change, adapt and act. When empowering people, teams, leaders and organizations, I noticed that this behavioral innovation is the key to narrow the gap between knowledge and action, and so to promote sustainable transformation, unleash human potential, and promote well-being and better human relationships. My goal has always been to help people and organizations achieve sustainable success and resilience by leveraging the power of neuroscience, ensuring well-being and fostering an environment where innovation and collaboration thrive.”

The Coura Neurocompatible® Method

The Worlds Times: What exactly is the Coura Neurocompatible® method, and how does it differ from other approaches in organizational transformation?

Renata Coura replied, “The Coura Neurocompatible® method is a unique approach at the crossroads of neurosciences, behavioral innovation, and sustainable transformation. A methodology based on the constantly evolving scientific knowledge of the brain functions and of the brain’s impact in our behavior and interaction. Unlike traditional methods, which often focus solely on procedural changes, this method aims to transform both the individuals and the organization by enhancing the brain’s natural abilities and increasing the power of conscious action, individually and collectively. It integrates tools and strategies that help leaders cultivate self-awareness, conscious leadership, and emotional intelligence, creating environments where high performance and well-being coexist. It also offers tools for organizational regeneration, resilience and sustainable development. It is not just about concepts or actions. It’s also about a mindset that focuses on people, planet, and productivity simultaneously. It starts with brain interactions: knowing what our brain needs, how it works and how it interacts, gives us a better systemic vision and a better approach to individuals and their environment. This neurocompatible® approach not only aligns with how our brains function but also ensures the longevity of positive changes within organizations.”

A Path to Sustainable CSR

The Worlds Times: How do you see neuroscience contributing to sustainable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts in businesses?

Renata Coura replied, “Neuroscience offers a valuable lens for understanding human behavior, which is central to successful CSR initiatives. Many CSR projects fail due to insufficient focus on the human element—the people driving the change. Neuroscience helps identify the biological and psychological barriers to action, allowing us to address these effectively and foster true engagement. By understanding how to increase the power of conscious action and activate positive motivations and collective intelligence, we can make CSR efforts more impactful and sustainable, aligning them with human tendencies and needs for lasting change.”

Overcoming Barriers

The Worlds Times: In your experience, what are the main challenges organizations face when integrating neuroscience-based practices into their leadership and management?

Renata Coura replied, “One of the main challenges is overcoming preconceived notions about leadership and management. Many traditional practices focus on top-down approaches, whereas neuroscience-based methods advocate for self-awareness, participative leadership, and emotional intelligence. Another challenge is gaining buy-in from all levels of an organization; it requires commitment to a mind-set shift and adopting practices that foster collaboration and individual empowerment. We address these challenges through tailored programs that help leaders and teams understand the concrete benefits of these neuroscience-based practices.”

Real-World Impact

The Worlds Times: Can you give an example of how the Empowerment Center’s training in neuroscience has helped an organization achieve its goals?

Renata Coura replied, “Absolutely. One of our recent clients, a large multinational corporation, sought to enhance collaboration and reduce burnout. Through our training, particularly modules on the Emotional Brain and Decision Making, their leaders learned how to foster environments of psychological safety and engagement. This allowed them to increase team resilience and job satisfaction, which ultimately improved overall productivity and employee retention. By understanding and applying neuroscience to their management practices, they were able to build a sustainably high-performance culture.”

Key Elements of Empowerment

The Worlds Times: What are some key components of the training programs offered by the Empowerment Center?

Renata Coura replied, “Our programs are like « neuro-journeys » that leads people from brain knowledge to self-knowledge and action. All those journeys are interactive, based on active learning, collective intelligence and immediate application, and helps leaders to pass from the knowledge of how our brain works and drives action and interaction, to more self-awareness and self-leadership. At the individual level we have training and mentoring programs to foster: Well-being and health, Stress management, Time and priority management, Emotional Intelligence, Communication and interpersonnal relations, Assertiviness, Neurocompatible Leadership, Sustainable Performance, Cognitive Performance, Behavioral Innovation.

At the organizational level, the journey starts with an audit allowing to build a global view and a system overview that will lead to a diagnosis and tailor-made recommendations to act on the root causes and promote effective and sustainable transformation. Finally, we support the implementation and deployment of solutions. By examining each situation as a system made up of interdependent, interacting and mutually impacting elements, we act on the underlying problems. We look beyond the apparent symptoms and take a global, systemic and integrated approach. We treat the causes by drawing on several complementary areas of expertise allowing us to guide transformations on: Strategic governance for sustainable development; Transformation of managerial culture and leadership; Building or transformation of corporate culture; CSR: from design to 360° deployment; Quality of life and working conditions; Safety and accident prevention; Communication, collaboration and teamwork; Optimizing supplier relations: lasting, efficient links; Sustainable purchasing.”

Fostering Resilience & Innovation

The Worlds Times: How does your approach help leaders to build more resilient and innovative teams?

Renata Coura replied, “Our approach encourages leaders to build resilience by focusing on mental well-being and social dynamics within their teams. Through the Coura Neurocompatible® method, we teach leaders to create environments that naturally support collaboration, creativity, and adaptability. By understanding brain function and applying tools for effective communication and decision-making, leaders can inspire their teams to handle challenges with agility and foster a culture where innovation is a shared responsibility, not just a top-down directive.”

The Heart of the Work

Lastly we asked,What is the most rewarding aspect of your work in helping organizations transform through applied neuroscience?”

The most rewarding part of my work is witnessing the genuine transformation that occurs at both personal and organizational levels. Seeing leaders develop a newfound understanding of themselves and their teams, and watching entire organizations evolve to prioritize well-being and the human factor as the only way to promote sustainable performance is incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that our work contributes to creating workplaces where people feel valued, engaged, and empowered to reach their full potential is what drives me every day.” Renata Coura Concluded
