Harrison Ford has acted in 85 movies and TV shows in his long career, which started over 50 years ago. His latest role is in Captain America: Brave New World, where he plays President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who later becomes the Red Hulk.
At the start of his career, Ford mostly had small roles in movies and guest appearances on TV shows. However, he gained some attention for his performances in The Conversation and American Graffiti.
His big break came in 1977 when he played Han Solo, a space pirate, in Star Wars, directed by George Lucas. After that, Ford became a worldwide star.
Check out the photos below of Ford, now 82, in some of his biggest roles since Star Wars, including his latest in Captain America: Brave New World.
‘Star Wars’ (1977)
Harrison Ford first played Han Solo in Star Wars (1977), also known as Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. This movie started his long partnership with writer, director, and producer George Lucas.
Ford played Han Solo again in three more movies: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Return of the Jedi (1983), and The Force Awakens (2015).
He also appeared as Han Solo in the unpopular Star Wars Holiday Special (1978) and made a brief, uncredited appearance in The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Between the second and third Star Wars movies, Harrison Ford played the brave adventurer Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The movie was directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by George Lucas, who also helped write the story. Later, the title was changed to Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.
This film started a new series for Ford. It was followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984 and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. Ford returned as the treasure-hunting archaeologist in two more movies: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).
Blade Runner (1982)
Harrison Ford starred in another sci-fi movie that became a classic—Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott. He plays Rick Deckard, a former police officer who now works as a “blade runner,” hunting down Replicants—AI beings that look and act like humans.
Years later, just like with Star Wars and Indiana Jones, Ford returned as Deckard in the 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049.
‘Witness’ (1985)
Witness (1985) is a crime drama starring Harrison Ford and directed by Peter Weir. Ford plays Detective John Book, who goes undercover in an Amish community to protect a young boy, Samuel (played by Lukas Haas), after the boy sees his father’s murder.
This was the only time Ford was nominated for an Oscar, in the Best Actor category.
Working Girl (1988)
Harrison Ford starred in the 1988 romantic comedy Working Girl with Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver, directed by Mike Nichols.
Ford plays Jack Trainer, a business expert who falls for Tess McGill (Griffith). Tess is a secretary with big dreams of becoming an executive. But her boss, Katharine Parker (Weaver), steals her idea and takes credit for it. Tess fights to prove herself and succeed in the corporate world.
The Fugitive (1993)
After starring in the 1990 mystery Presumed Innocent and playing CIA analyst Jack Ryan in Patriot Games (1992), Harrison Ford took on the role of Dr. Richard Kimble in The Fugitive. This movie, directed by Andrew Davis, is based on the 1960s TV show that originally starred David Janssen.
Kimble is on the run after being wrongly accused of killing his wife, Helen (Sela Ward). U.S. Marshal Deputy Samuel Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones) is leading the chase to capture him.
‘Clear and Present Danger’ (1994)
After the success of Patriot Games (1992), Harrison Ford played Jack Ryan again in Clear and Present Danger (1994), directed by Phillip Noyce. The movie is based on Tom Clancy’s bestselling book. This was Ford’s second and final time playing Ryan.
Air Force One (1997)
Harrison Ford plays President James Marshall in this action movie directed by Wolfgang Petersen. The story follows a terrorist, Ivan Korshunov (played by Gary Oldman), who hijacks the president’s plane. He threatens the president and his family, but Marshall uses his military skills to fight back and save everyone.
“What Lies Beneath” (2000)
Harrison Ford stars in this supernatural thriller directed by Robert Zemeckis. He plays Norman Spencer, a university scientist. His wife, Claire (Michelle Pfeiffer), believes a ghost is haunting their home in Vermont.
‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ (2008)
Harrison Ford made news in 2008 when he returned to play Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The movie also brought back Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, Indy’s old friend and former girlfriend from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Shia LaBeouf played their son, Mutt Williams.
“42” (2013)
In the movie 42, Harrison Ford played Branch Rickey, a famous baseball executive. Chadwick Boseman, who was not very well-known at the time, played Jackie Robinson, a baseball legend.
The story takes place in 1947. The title 42 comes from Robinson’s jersey number. The movie shows how Rickey signed Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, making him the first Black player in Major League Baseball.
After 42, Boseman played famous roles like musician James Brown in Get on Up and the superhero Black Panther in several Marvel movies. Sadly, he passed away from cancer in 2020 at the age of 43.
‘Blade Runner 2049’ (2017)
Harrison Ford returned as Rick Deckard in Blade Runner 2049 (2017), directed by Denis Villeneuve. This sequel came 36 years after the original Blade Runner by Ridley Scott. In this movie, Ford shared the main role with Ryan Gosling, who played a replicant blade runner named KD6-3.7, or simply K.
‘1923’ (2022/2025)
Harrison Ford joined the Yellowstone story in December 2022 with the prequel series 1923. He played Jacob Dutton alongside Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton. Ford and Mirren will return for a new season of 1923 on February 20.
Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
