World’s Best Vodka 2024

The International Wine and Spirits Competition has announced its top scores for 2024. Earlier this summer, we shared the top American whiskey winner. Now, let’s see what the judges had to say about vodka. Out of thousands of entries, only two vodkas scored 99 out of 100 points, and just one of those was unflavored. That honor goes to Initiale Vodka from Maison Solignac, located near Cognac, France.

Even though the area is famous for its grapes, Solignac chose to make their award-winning vodka from rye grain. They use a process called “ultra slow distillation” in small copper pot stills, resulting in a spirit full of savory flavors and baking spices.

The IWSC judges described the vodka as having “biscuity sweetness, honeyed warmth, and fragrant meadow notes,” with hints of fennel and caramel. They noted its silky, creamy texture and a slow, warm finish.

The brand is named after its founder, Pierre Solignac, who grew up in Versailles. He learned about old vodka-making traditions while living in Russia during the 1990s. Specifically, he discovered techniques from the 18th century, long before modern industrial methods turned vodka into the neutral spirit we often know today.

This smooth, 80-proof vodka is far from neutral and is best enjoyed chilled, but not frozen. Its complex flavors pair well with high-quality sashimi, cured fish, or the classic caviar presentation.

There are also subtle notes of freshly cracked black pepper that practically beg to be paired with food. To elevate your tasting experience at home, consider getting a high-quality pepper grinder, seasoning some smoked salmon, and enjoying it with a chilled glass of Initiale Vodka. You won’t regret it.

The only downside is that this top-rated vodka isn’t available on US shelves—at least not yet. Hopefully, the global recognition from the IWSC will help open up distribution channels. In the meantime, European connoisseurs can buy a bottle for about 55 €.

Drinkers in Europe should also look out for Mango Vodka from the British producer Desi Daru. It was the only other vodka to score 99 at this year’s IWSC. The judges praised this fruit-flavored vodka, saying:

“Beautifully fresh aromas of real mango. The mango flavor shines and lingers on the smooth, vibrant palate, alongside peppery vodka notes and perfectly balanced alcohol. Enjoy it in any cocktail or savor it on its own.”
