World Coconut Day

Celebrated on September 2, World Coconut Day honors this incredibly versatile fruit. You can’t make a piña colada or a good Thai curry without it, and its water is a great recovery drink. Even the fibrous husk can be used to repel mosquitoes when burned. The coconut plant and its various parts are useful for food, drink, cosmetics, and decoration. Some enthusiasts believe that coconut oil can even reverse dental decay if swished around in your mouth for 20 minutes a day. While not everyone might be keen on swishing oil, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy this tropical wonderfruit, whether you’re on a deserted island or at home.

History of World Coconut Day

On World Coconut Day, celebrated on September 2, we celebrate the amazing coconut and its many benefits, both for health and the economy. This holiday brings attention to the importance of coconuts, particularly in Asian and Pacific regions where the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) oversees much of the coconut production.

The name “coconut” has an interesting history. The three indentations on a coconut’s surface, which resemble a face, reminded Portuguese and Spanish explorers of a bogeyman-like figure from their folklore called ‘Coco.’ This led to the name “coconut.”

Coconuts traveled from India to East Africa with Arab sailors and from Southeast Asia to Madagascar and the Pacific with Austronesian sailors. They have since become incredibly valuable, providing a wide range of products. The tender flesh is used in cooking, while the oil, milk, and water have various uses. Coconut butter, cream, and oil are popular in beauty products, and the husks and leaves are used for making doormats, roofs, and huts.

World Coconut Day was first observed in 2009 to mark the creation of the APCC. Each year, the International Coconut Community sets a theme for the day. For example, the 2020 theme was ‘Invest In Coconut To Save The World.’

Why We Love World Coconut Day

A. There are many ways to enjoy coconuts
You’ve probably used coconut in some way recently. Whether it’s in a smoothie, a cocktail, a dish made with coconut milk, cream, or oil, or even in beauty products like face wash, shampoo, or moisturizer. Coconut shells can also be used for things like bowls, buttons, and even making the sound of horses’ hooves.

B. Coconuts are delicious
Coconut adds a delicious creaminess to any food or drink. It gives smoothies a tropical taste and adds richness to curries. Raw coconut is a tasty snack and adds the perfect texture to baked goods. Unsweetened coconut works well in both savory and sweet dishes.

C. Coconuts are nutritious
While coconuts aren’t the next kale, they are packed with nutrients. They are rich in iron, magnesium, fiber, and protein. Coconut water provides potassium and sodium. Coconut oil, when used in moderation, can be part of a healthy diet, though opinions on its benefits vary. Coconut products are also popular in gluten-free, soy-free, and vegan diets.
